In
addition to management requirements, each SOM undergraduate student must
fulfill the following additional requirements:
General
Education
Binghamton University has adopted
a comprehensive General Education curriculum. This curriculum has broad
goals. It is intended to help students develop:
- an appreciation
of and capacity for effective personal expression;
- knowledge about
various intellectual traditions;
- an understanding
of and respect for different peoples and civilizations;
- knowledge of and
appreciation for the natural world, achieved through active engagement
with the methods and philosophy of natural science;
- logical thinking,
balanced skepticism, and tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty;
- a knowledge of
and appreciation for the arts and creative expression.
For additional information
about General Education requirements and courses, please refer to the
General Education section of the Binghamton
University Bulletin
Note: Entering students
may fulfill certain General Education requirements with Advanced Placement
(AP) credits.

Calculus
The minimum mathematics requirement
for all SOM students is one semester of calculus. This may be satisfied
by AP calculus taken while in high school, by a course transferred from
another university, or by either of the Calculus courses offered by the
Mathematics Department at BU. MATH 220 is a survey of calculus oriented
towards management students. MATH 221 is the first semester of the normal
three semester calculus sequence for math/science majors. Students who
wish to take additional calculus or calculus-based coursework are required
to take MATH 221 as MATH 220 does not satisfy the prerequisite for higher
level MATH courses.

Statistics
Coursework
Management students are required
to complete an introductory course in statistics. It is strongly advised
that students enroll in CQS 112, which is the management-oriented statistics
course offered by the school. Courses offered by the Math, Psychology
or Economic Departments are acceptable, but a second course cannot be
taken for non-management elective credit since it would be considered
a duplicate course. Only one introductory statistics course may be taken
towards the degree. Upper level statistics courses from the Math Department
can be used to fulfill non-introductory liberal arts coursework.

Non-introductory
Course Requirements
All SOM undergraduates are
required to complete a minimum of three non-introductory liberal arts
courses. A Harpur College course is considered non-introductory if according
to the Binghamton University Undergraduate Bulletin it meets one of four
criteria:
- The course has
a prerequisite course requirement.
- The course is designated
by the offering department to be an intermediate or advanced course.
- The course is "Not
open to Freshman" or "Open to Sophomores" or "Open
to Juniors and Seniors only."
- The course is numbered
300 or above.
One four-credit hour Harpur
College course OR two two-credit hour courses which are both non-introductory
may be used to satisfy one of the three course requirements. All other
courses that do not meet one of these four criteria are deemed to be introductory.
Three credit transfer courses are evaluated separately and require a course
prerequisite to be considered non-introductory.

Writing
Requirement
The School of Management writing
requirement consists of two courses in the liberal arts with a writing
emphasis designation and three courses for students enrolled in the PriceWaterHouseCoopers Honors Program. These courses are available in all divisions of
Harpur College and are identified in the Schedule of Classes by the "C"
designation. Please note: courses which carry a "W" (writing)
designation are recommended to improve a student's writing skills, but
do not fulfill the SOM writing requirement. A combination of courses with
a "W" designation does not fulfill a "C" course requirement.
