Concentration
The masters-level concentration
in finance curriculum offers students a strong foundation in the
various areas of finance, including corporate finance, investments,
international finance and financial institutions. This knowledge
base is supplemented by case studies that provide applications to
real-world cases. The emphasis is on development of strong analytical
and quantitative skills that are readily applicable in finance-related
jobs. Students also gain valuable, practical experience in using
computer software applications in financial modeling.
Concentration
Requirements:
To fulfill the requirements of the finance concentration, students
must complete the standard MBA core curriculum and three electives

Finance Elective Courses:
Unless otherwise noted, each course
is four credits .
FIN 520 - Advanced
Financial Management:
Financial management
as it relates to assets and liabilities of a firm. Typical coverage
includes financial planning, control and forecasting, receivables
management, cash management, inventory policy, leasing decisions,
mergers and acquisitions, capital structure, dividend policy, debt
refunding and cost of capital. Emphasis is on cases and integration
of concepts from MGMT 505. Prerequisite: MGMT 505.
FIN 540 - Security
and Portfolio Analysis:
Integrates traditional
security analysis with more recently developed theories on market
efficiency, risk, capital asset pricing. Analytical securities valuation
models and techniques; macroeconomic influences in securities price
behavior. Analytical framework applied to pragmatic investment decisions
in stock market. Theories underlying portfolio analysis, its applications
for securities portfolio management. Utility maximization, portfolio
building models, portfolio revisions. Capital asset pricing theories,
implications for investment decisions. Prerequisite:MGMT 505.
FIN 581A=Capital MKTS Research Fin/ACCT
Selected Topics in finance
theory, empirical studies and financial policy. Emphasis is on current
topics and recent developments.
FIN 595 - Internship
(1,2,4,6 cr.)
Students may gain academic
credit for meaningful educational internship. Academic validity
of each opportunity verified by a faculty sponsor. Provides significant
experience related to student's career goals.
Internships
The School of Management encourages
MBA and MS Accounting students to undertake well structured internship
experiences and facilitates the process through the SOM Graduate Advising Office. Students may pursue internships
in a variety of ways.
The School of Management maintains
an online database of internship opportunities. These are largely local
positions with some NYC area positions in the Summer session. Students
are also advised to check with the Career
Development Center to research national programs and to connect with
recruiters who often interview for summer pre-professional programs. Students
wishing to obtain an internship outside of the Binghamton area may inquire
directly with companies in which they have an interest.
For-credit
Internships. Students interested in registering for a for-credit internship
must review and follow instructions contained in the SOM's Guidelines pertaining to for-credit internships.
International Students,
generally, may also participate in the SOM Internship Program. However,
they first must complete additional paperwork and advising from the Office
of International Student and Scholar Services.
FIN 597 - Independent
Study (var. cr.)
In-depth study in particular
area of interest, under direction of appropriate faculty.
