Q: How many credits can I waive?

A: The MBA Program has a “no waiver” policy. However, MS Accounting students can waive background coursework. To waive a course from a non AACSB accredited school, complete a waiver request form, attach copies of syllabi, course descriptions, and unofficial transcripts. You must then submit all paperwork to the SOM Graduate Advising Office (Academic A 130). To waive a course from an AACSB accredited school, you only need to attach unofficial transcripts to the waiver request form. In addition, a grade of ”C” or better is required for a course to be waived. It is also important for you to verify whether or not your school is AACSB accredited.

Q: How many credits can I transfer?

A: You may petition to transfer up to 8 graduate credits towards the elective requirements in lieu of comparable graduate course credits if these credits have not been applied to another degree. Courses transferred must be of the nature of an elective and not a “core” course in management. To transfer credits, complete the Transfer Credit application and attach a copy of the course syllabus from the transfer university department or faculty member teaching the course. In addition, attach a photocopy of the complete course description of the course to be waived from the transfer university’s most recent catalog/bulletin. Submit the paperwork to the SOM Graduate Advising Office (Academic A 130) no later than two full weeks before the course begins. If your petition is accepted, only the credits will be transferred-not the grades.

Q: How is academic advising handled when I first arrive to campus?

A: During orientation, you will be given a “Plan of Study” for your graduate program. You are expected to retain this plan of study and to use it as your advising guide, updating it as you complete your degree requirements. Advising questions can be addressed either by the Advising Interns or by the Assistant Director.

Q: What is the graduate course overload policy?

A: The Graduate School overload policy sets a limit of 18 credit hours for School of Management graduate students and requires approval by the SOM Assistant Director for registration of more than 18 credits. If the overload is approved, the credit limit will be adjusted and you may then add your overload course via the BUSI system.

Q: How many credits of independent study/internship are I allowed in my masters program?

A: A total of 8 credit hours of independent study (MGMT 597) and/or internship (MGMT 595) may be counted as masters elective credits, with no more than four internship credits.

Q: How important is Electronic Mail?

A: Electronic Mail is EXTREMELY important! Graduate students are required to activate their e-mail accounts and to periodically review them for messages. This is the fastest method for faculty, staff and administration to reach you with important information. Throughout the semester, information on advising, assistantship opportunities, scholarship, internships, school events and other employment opportunities will be sent electronically to all students.

Q: What should I do if I cannot register for coursework and want to take a semester off?

A: Graduate students in a degree program are required by the Graduate School to maintain matriculated status. Students who find that they will be unable to register for regular coursework are required to register each semester of the academic year for one credit of continuous registration (MGMT 700). A leave of absence may be granted only in exceptional circumstances. Students who do not maintain continuous registration are dropped from the graduate program and must reapply for admission. Continuous registration is administered by the Advising Office (x2317).

Q: How do I get my plan of study updated?

A: Call SOM Advising (x2317) and request an update. You can pick it up from the office or we can mail it to you. If you would like, you can also schedule an appointment to go over your plan of study with one of the advisors.

Q: Do I need to make an appointment to seek advising?

A: No! Most graduate students have similar questions that can generally be answered with a quick visit with one of the Advising Interns and will not require an appointment. If referral is necessary, the Advising Interns will refer you directly to the Assistant Director of the program. However, students who have general advising question are also encouraged to contact the office via electronic mail at somadvis@binghamton.edu.

Q: Can I take courses in my concentration area during the first two semesters?

A: Normally you cannot register for concentration courses before completing all core courses. Specifically, credit must have been granted in the introductory course before registering for a concentration course.

Q: How many credits are required to declare a graduate concentration?

A: You must complete 12 credit hours in one of the designated concentration areas to complete it. Only one graduate concentration is formally permitted.

Q: Can I take more than 12 credit hours in any one-concentration area?

A: Yes. Students admitted under the current curriculum may take all 16 elective credits in one concentration area.

Q: I am a matriculated graduate student and am interested in a TA/GA position, how do I become a candidate?

A: Generally, a letter and resume addressed to the associate dean stating your interest are all that is necessary to be considered for a position. Continuation of funding is dependent upon the student's meeting the conditions set in the original terms and conditions of appointment. The deadline for applying for a fall position is February 15; the deadline for applying for a spring position is October 15.
